First Project by DIVE-Turbine & Natel Energy in France

April 2026

In the current issue of zek HYDRO by zek-VER Mag. Roland Gruber e.U., our collaboration with Natel Energy is featured starting on page 65. We are pleased to share further details about our first project: installation is scheduled for early 2027.

The project will deploy two DIVE–Natel turbines with a combined capacity of over 500 kW—one variable-speed and one fixed-speed unit—arranged vertically and equipped with integrated, directly driven permanent magnet generators.

At the core of the system is Natel’s patented FishSafe® runner design, featuring thick, forward-curved leading edges. Combined with the DIVE turbine-generator concept, this results in a compact, flood-secure turbine-generator unit.

With a maximum design flow of up to 40 m³/s (both units combined), the system eliminates the need for fine screens and bypass systems.

For the operator, this means:

  • reduced capital and operating costs,
  • higher energy yield without bypass-related or additional water losses,
  • reduced maintenance effort for both turbine and intake screening systems,
  • safe fish passage with very high survival rates, including for brown trout.

This project demonstrates that hydropower and ecological improvements can be effectively combined—without the need for complex additional structures.

We look forward to implementing this first joint project in France and will share updates on the next steps.
